Enipeas River

Enipeas River starts from Litochoro and according to a myth Leto bathed here. Its name comes from a sea deity, father of Pelias and Neleus and husband of Tyro. The gorge of the village attracts many tourists every year. According to mythology, the Maenads devoured musician Orpheus in this gorge.

The source of Enipeas River is at an altitude of 1000 meters. The fonts (“vathres”) are natural pools with water temperature just above zero degrees. Surprisingly, the hiking trail along the river is not among the most popular of Olympus as most climbers prefer to go past it by car and then go climbing on the high peaks.

However, this hiking trail is one of the most beautiful of all and it is also ideal for family outings. The path starts from Litochoro and it is 9 km long. You will need approximately 5-6 hours to reach Prionia location. The water of the river is potable and the main water source of Litochoro.
